ReplyDeleteIn an episode of Friends, Monica and Chandler were caught doing it at an apartment. They don't know that the other friends know about it. Joey proposes they just spill the beans and avoid the secrets, but Phoebe wants to pretend she doesn't know so she can screw around with that info. With all the secrecy, Chandler starts messing with them right back, and it's hard to tell who really knows what, and who really has the upper hand with the info.

The game theory is demonstrated in an episode of "The Simpsons", where a game of rock, paper, scissors is used to settle a dispute. To decide who will get a precious comic book on Sundays and in the event that a 0 is randomly drawn to determine who gets it, rock, paper, scissors will be played to tell the winner or the book on Sundays. Bart, when playing against Lisa for the book, claims, "Good ol' rock never loses". Therefore, Lisa is left to decide quickly whether Bart will actually choose rock and she should in turn draw paper to beat him, or if he is actually using reverse psychology to get Lisa to draw paper so that he can draw scissors to beat her instead. Each is challenged to decide whether or not to take one for their word (Lisa) and decide whether or not he will be taken for his word (Bart).

“Bachelor Pad” is a reality show that brings together contestants from The Bachelor and The Bachelorette seasons. They present the audience with how the $250,000 prize money is going to be divided, which the final 2 contestants Holly and Michael knew about beforehand. The audience is told that the two will go into separate rooms, and choose between two options, “SHARE” or “KEEP.”If they both pick “SHARE” they walk away with $125,000 each.If one chooses “SHARE” and the other chooses “KEEP”, the contestant that chose “KEEP” gets the entire $250,000. If they both choose “KEEP”, neither gets the money and it is split among the bachelors and bachelorettes that have been eliminated. In the end, it is revealed that both Holly and Michael both chose “SHARE”, and the money was split evenly between them.

ReplyDelete"Friend or Foe?" is a game show that aired from 2002 to 2005 on the Game Show Network. On the game show, three pairs of people compete. When a pair is eliminated, they play a game similar to the "Golden Balls" show to determine how the winnings are split. If they both cooperate (Friend), they share the winnings 50–50. If one cooperates and the other defects (Foe), the defector gets all the winnings and the cooperator gets nothing. If both defect, both leave with nothing. Surprisingly, people cooperated more often than expected.

ReplyDeleteIn the movie Footloose, two boys must choose when or if to jump out of an automobile speeding towards a cliff to settle their situation. If one jumps before the other, the second to jump is the winner and becomes gang member or prom king. If both boys jump at the same time, there is a tie. If neither jump, they die. Jimmie jumps before the car reaches the edge of the cliff, but Buzz is unable to jump with his jacket caught in the door handle.

ReplyDeletein the series death note this concept was used an ample amount of times but ill stick with a broad example. our MC light was faced with the choice of selling out the first serial killer to save himself, however this would mean she could be interrogated and expose who he really being as that they had a special connection. but on the other side if they work together it'll bring him to the spotlight since she does modeling as a job. so he was faced with risk being exposed but live in secrecy or live in the public eye and take a long term risk to being caught

In the TV show, South Park, the concept of Game Theory was exercised. In the example given by the website, Cartman and the boys decide to decorate a teacher's house with toilet paper. They are eventually caught and make up a back up story to tell to cover up the truth. However, Cartman looking at his options through the concept of game theory decides that the best way to get out is to snitch leaving him with only one week of detention while the other 3 boys leave with 2 weeks of detention. He used the concept of game theory and got the best deal he could.

Two teenage boys decide to settle a dispute by way of near-death experiences. Each speeds an automobile towards a cliff (or at each other, in later adaptations). A simple rule governs the challenge: the first to jump out of his automobile is the chicken and, by universally accepted social convention, concedes the object in dispute. The second to jump is victorious, and, depending on context, becomes gang leader, prom king, etc.

ReplyDeleteA good example of game theory is in season 5 episode 9 of Suits when Mike Ross and Harvey Specter separately went to two investment banking firms, one led by Tony Gionopoulis and the other, by Jonathan Sidwell. Harvey and Mike tried to pit both firms against each other to take a deal that involved buying a company called Mckernon motors. A good example of game theory is in the movie, The Princess Bride. The hero of the movie, Westley, is confronted by his enemy, Vizzini, and in doing so, he challenges him to a Battle of Wits. Westley takes two glasses of wine, placing poison in one, but not the other. This action leads them both into an in depth conversation where Vizzini tries to figure out which glass is poisoned by putting together what he knows about Westley, and what kind of move he would make. He finally decides to switch the glasses when Westley's back is turned but still gets poisoned either way, because both of the glasses are poisoned (Westley, however, is immune to that particular poison).

In the movie Stand by me, there is a game between a couple of boys a game of chicken is played and in this game they are using cars and driving. In the game chicken the main goal of the game is to keep doing a certain dangerous thing until the other person essentially the "chicken" gives up. Now In Stand by Me the boys are driving towards each other until one of them becomes the chicken and swerves out of the way to avoid getting hit. This is an example of game theory in the sense that if one of them is determined to not be the chicken and does not show signs of moving it makes the choice for the other player to move out of the way so the players will not get hurt.

Butch realizes that the outcome is Pareto dominated, which means that it would make at least one group better off without hurting any other group. Mr.Harriman is spending more money trying to catch the robbers than the total amount of money the robbers actually stole. Butch tells Mr.Harriman that if he just paid them as much money as he spent to create this plan, they would stop robbing him. Mr.Harriman was unaware of this possibility and settled for the one that ended up harming his business.

The Game Theory is demonstrated in the classic Peanuts animated special, where Charlie Brown must decide whether or not to kick a football from under Lucy. Lucy continuously withdraws the ball at the last moment, forcing Charlie Brown to fly up into the air and land on his back. Each time Lucy asks Charlie Brown to kick the football, Charlie can either choose to reject Lucy’s offer or accept it. If he rejects, then the game is over and he simply walks away; but if he accepts, then Lucy has a choice to either hold the ball or pull it away. Charlie must reject the offer if he wants to be pain-free, but because Lucy is a “game theory expert,” Charlie is always tricked into kicking the ball and ends up landing flat on his back.

In the movie Captain America: Civil War, Captain America is faced with the difficult task of either saving his lifelong friend, or concede to the wishes of the UN and several hundred nations of the world. His childhood friend (practically his brother), Bucky Barnes, was wrongfully framed for an attack that he didn't commit. Captain America deeply wants to clear Bucky's name and prove to the world that he is no longer a threat. On the other hand, going against the UN and many of his teammates, including Iron Man, paints Captain America as a vigilante. Captain America decides to protect his friend and defies the UN, causing him to be hunted for the latter half of the film by numerous special forces teams and even a cat-like king. This represents game theory because Captain America had to choose between his best friend, or dividing his team and defaming his character. By choosing to protect Bucky, Captain America was able to expose a bigger conspiracy than what was originally thought.

As the pilot is being dragged even higher by the wind, the hot-air ballon is nearing a cliff and in the basket, a child remained. The narrator and three others saw this and ran to help as all four of them grabbed hold of the line. However, the dilemma occurs when the pilot falls off (the heaviest individual). So with only 4 people still trying to save the hot-air ballon with the boy inside, they all have to make the decision to hold on, or to let go and remain alive, with each individual not knowing what choice the other will decide on. There is still a chance that they can save the boy with all four of them hanging on once the wind subsides, but as they rise higher in the air, three of them decide to let go because the odds were in neither of their favors of all of them choosing to hang on.

The game is played such as matches or other objects are arranged in two or more piles. Players alternate removing some or all of the matches from any one pile. The player to remove the last match wins. Therefore we can see how game theory is shown in the TV show of Surviror.

Game theory is the study of how people interact in competition or in other words the science of strategy. Therefore, the movie Memento is a prime example of this economic principle in action. The movie focuses on a man whose wife was murdered, however, he has a form of amnesia that makes it impossible for him to make new memories. As he tries to figure out who killed his wife, he must invent unique ways of reminding himself of what he has discovered so far, such as tattooing his discoveries on his body. This movie exemplifies two very real aspects of game theory: imperfect recall and unfair advantages. In the real world competitors very rarely have perfect recall and information distribution. This leads to unfair advantages. For example, in the movie because of the main characters imperfect recall his competitor had an unfair advantage because he was able to contaminate the main guy's evidence .

An example of game theory can be found in Furious 7. Deckard and Dominic are in their own cars facing each other in a distance. Game Theory applies as they approach each other at a really high speed, where they both have the decision of either going straight or swerve. If both Dominic and Deckard swerve, then they don't hit each other. If Dominic/Deckard goes straight and Deckard/Dominic swerves, then no one will get hit but whoever swerves will be seen as a coward. The two main choices are, the current Red Paladin named Keith, and the Princess Allura. If they switch Keith from being Red Paladin to Black Paladin, they will upset their fans but in turn have an easier path in which the could continue the story. Since Shiro is now temporarily out of commission and there must be 5 Paladins, they have two choices for Allura. Either they Promote her to Black Paladin, since she already has a leadership role in the series, and in turn satisfy many fans thus gaining more views. Or they could assign Allura the position of Blue Paladin in which the story might or might not be easier to play out, but incredibly dissatisfy the fan base and domain causing them to lose views.

The example of game theory is shown in the movie In The Hunt for the Red October, when Soviet admiral Marko Alexandrovich Ramius, followed by a group of naval officers, decided to desert with hi-tech submarine from the Soviet navy and request an asylum from the US government. At some point, Ramius vessel comes across American submarine Dallas that already received the order to destroy it. However, after having been approached by a CIA agent who believes that Ramius wants to defect rather than hit US targets, Dallas’s captain Bart Manucuso debates whether or not to sink it. To abstain from striking, he needs an assurance from Red October that it is not an enemy. In other words, Ramius needs to assure the American counterpart that he does not want to hit military targets in the US, but rather want to negotiate an asylum.
Both sides have two options: they can try to torpedo the other submarine, or they can engage in negotiation (cooperation). If they cooperate, they both are not destroyed. If Ramius wants to
negotiate and Mancuso hits him, Ramius is destroyed and Mancuso survives. Similar result is obtained when the situation is reversed: if Ramius fires at Mancuso who wants
to negotiate, Raimus survives and Mancuso is destroyed. Finally, if they fire at each other at the same time, both sides are mutually destroyed.

The Grim Trigger Strategy A trigger strategy usually applied to repeated prisoner's dilemmas in which a player begins by cooperating in the first period, and continues to cooperate until a single defection by her opponent, following which, the player defects forever. Grim trigger is a severe trigger strategy since a single defection brings about an eternal end to cooperation, in contrast to the much more forgiving tit for tat.
