The price of a carton of pasta has increased to N 2,300 and the price of vegetable oil has increased to N 6,000. Some residents are complaining because they think that only the price of imported foreign goods should go up; the price for the locally produced goods should remain the same. However, that is not the case. Some of the store owners even are begging for the residents to understand that it isn't their choice to raise the prices overnight. They are saying that the residents need to make reasonable judgments before 'crucifying' them. Since there are no substitutes available, the people are forced to buy these goods at high prices.

ReplyDeleteArticle Title:Electricity in Nigeria Powerless
Date:3/3/16
Market Structure:Oligopolies
After years in which state-owned power plants decayed, the government changed course by selling power stations and the distribution grids that carry power to homes and businesses. Yet the supply of power has failed to respond as hoped in the two years since privatisation. At the moment the country’s big stations produce a pitiful 2,800MW, which is about as much as is used by Edinburgh. Only just over half of Nigerians have access to electricity, and it is still harder for businesses to hook up to the grid than almost anywhere else. One reason why privatisation has failed to improve Nigeria’s power supply is that the process itself was flawed from the start. Even as companies were bidding to buy power stations or distribution companies, striking staff prevented them from looking at what they were buying.

Market Structure: Perfect Competition
Starbucks will enter the Italian market by opening the first store in Milan. Starbucks is not the only firm to have stolen a march. An Italian developed the first espresso machine, but a Swiss firm, Nestlé, conquered the market for personal espresso-makers with its Nespresso system. The world’s second- and third-largest coffee groups, which merged in 2015 to create Jacobs Douwe Egberts, were American and Dutch, respectively. The industry is now in the grip of a fad for the “science” of coffee-making—improved grinding methods, better monitoring of water quality, and so on.

Market Structure: Monopolies
NASA can be considered to be a monopoly and is responsible for the most amount of space exploration. Due to the government allowing only certain space exploration companies to actually explore beyond a certain point, NASA is limitless. The government spending is a great deal on it and is the most powerful space exploration unit in the world. Since the barriers are present and they have control of resources it is considered a monopoly.

Date: 6th March 2016
Market Structure: Perfect Competition
The race between companies in the automotive industry to produce fully autonomous driving cars has long been happening. Ford, Audi and Volkswagen have been testing for many years but none have successfully produced a model suited for the urban environment. Tesla promises to build a fully functioning model within two years and Google hits roadblocks in development as they receive negative media attention for failed experiments. This article presents a perfect competition market structure because all of these companies are competing for the technological upgrade that will increase sales tremendously. Autonomous vehicles will be a hit with many car owners who simply view driving as getting from one destination to another. Autonomous vehicles may also lower collision rates and allow its passengers to be occupied with other activities. Passengers will be able to text without driving!

Date: 03/03/16
Market Structure: Monopoly
Dow and DuPont used to be separate companies but they have merged together only to receive a golden parachute payment after DowDuPont split into three. A golden parachute payment is a contract that gives a top executive a huge payment if their company is taken over and their employment is terminated as a result of it. The Dow CEO and DuPont CEO both receive a substantial amount of money and this seems suspicious as if they were already planning to sell or merge in order to receive a huge payout.

Date: today 🙄
Market structure: oligopoly
The article is speaking about the ban of the use of e cigs on commercial flight. This is related to oligopolies because the major airlines are considered oligopolies, and here it is shown that they have the power to make rules and regulations due to their position of authority. Therefore, they are able to find ways to pass rules like this in order to benefit their sales and prevent from further possible airline competition.
