  1. An example of game theory in pop culture would be the movie a Princess Bride. In the movie, there is a scene between two characters,Roberts and Vizzini as they have a battle of wits, where they have to each chose a cup to drink while one of them is poisoned, loser dies. There a several game theoretic schemes in the scene such as thinking strategically, which Roberts does. He tricks Vizzini into thinking that he has the unpoisoned cup, meanwhile knowing that both the cups were poisoned. Vizzini, thinking that he won the battle when he switched cups with Vizzini, keels over and dies while Robert states that he was able to drink the poison only because he developed an immunity to the posion. This exemplifies the strategical thinking that allowed Roberts to be successful in his quest.

  3. The movie "War Games" is an good demonstration of the game theory. David Lightman is a student, but a hacker at heart. After breaking into his school network to change this grades, he discovers a unnamed machine. Little does he know that this machine is WOPR, an automated military strategist developed by NORAD to predict plausible attacks in the US and instructions to retaliate. Lightman is presented with games such as "Theaterwide Biotoxic" and "Global Thermonuclear War". He innocently plays these games, not realizing the computer will actually interpret his movements as Soviet attacks. NORAD believes that the Soviet Union is attacking and plans to respond with force as well.

Lightman is brought into custody and with the help of Falken, the creator of WOPR, teach the machine the correct response to a nuclear attack: by not playing the game at all. The world does not deserve the catastrophe that can be brought by 2 superpowers throwing nuclear weapons at each other.

Game theory can be seen in the movie The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. At the end of the movie, there are two people who are fighting for a rock in which they believe Clint Eastwood has written valuable information. Game theory comes into play because they are not sure if Eastwood really did write the information, so they cannot kill him and decide to fight each other. Eastwood has given one an unloaded gun while he gives the other a loaded gun. His strategy is that the two people with the unloaded/loaded gun will try to shoot each other. Meanwhile, all Eastwood has to do is to kill the one who has the loaded gun. He eventually does so and gets away with everything including the money.

  15. A good example of game theory is found in the novel, "Jurassic Park". A mathematician named Ian Malcolm specialized in whats known as Chaos Theory. In the theory he talks about the game of pool. The Simple part: you can hit a ball linearly in one direction and it will start to hit the sides of the table (this way you measure the angle and direction of the ball, so in theory you can predict the behavior of the ball in the future).
But it turns out that it's hard to determine the exact measurements of where your ball will go in a few seconds, because of imperfections found in the surface of the ball, the indentations on the wood table. So these things will make a difference and can cause you to lose your accuracy. While a game of pool seems simple, the behavior of the ball is unpredictable.

The pilot falls and the remaining 4 drift up into the air with the balloon and the boy. The four have to consider if the others would let go before the balloon rises higher. If they all stay, the balloon will eventually come back down with the weight. If one lets go, the balloon will take the remaining people with it. 55. A good example of game theory is in season 5 episode 9 of Suits™ when Mike Ross and Harvey Specter separately went to two investment banking firms, one led by Tony Gionopoulis and the other, by Jonathan Sidwell. Harvey and Mike tried to pit both firms against each other to take a deal that involved buying a company called Mckernon motors. Mike and Harvey gave the rival company scenarios in which they would make profits and loses based on what the other rival company did, in regards to Mckernon Motors.

  56. Game theory is seen in "Hudson Hawk" at an auction in which a man bids at exactly the price he values the painting, but he doesn't get it because someone else values it one dollar more. If he had left space in the bidding, he may have gotten the painting.

  57. An example of game theory can be found in The Dark Knight. There are 6 robbers who attempt to rob a bank. 5 of them are doing the actual robbing, which leads them to harbor discontentment with the 6th, Joker, who plans the entire robbery. The 5 robbers feel that Joker's role in the bank robbery is not deserving of an equal split, which is an incentive for them to cheat him out.

However, Joker instructs each member of the bank robbery to murder another as each completes his role in the robbery to maximize shares. Once the alarm guy turns off the alarm, he is shot dead by the vault opener. Once the vault opener opens the vault, he is shot dead by the money-bagger. Once the money-bagger moves the money to the front of the bank, he is killed by the bus-driver. Once the bus-driver exits the bus and loads the money, he is killed by the last bank robber, who ends up taking all the money. In the movie's case, the last bank robber is Joker, the architect of the entire plan.

  58. An example of game theory can be found in Furious 7. Deckard and Dominic are in their own cars facing each other in a distance. Game Theory applies as they approach each other at a really high speed, where they both have the decision of either going straight or swerve. If both Dominic and Deckard swerve, then they don't hit each other. If Dominic/Deckard goes straight and Deckard/Dominic swerves, then no one will get hit but whoever swerves will be seen as a coward. If both Dominic and Deckard go straight, then they both hit each other. In the end, they both hit each other, and even though the cars were heavily damaged from the crash, they both still had the strength to fight each other face to face.

  59. In the movie enduring love, we see game theory at play as 4 men, who went to save the pilot of the air balloon, are seen struggling to get off of the balloon ropes as the wind gusts them upwards. Game theory plays a role when the 4 men must decide whether to look out for themselves or for the others. The narrator states that they would naturally look out for themselves first but the decision between altruism and selfishness was tough. 3 men including the narrator let go only coming off with a few bruises while one man went 100 feet up in the air in order to save the others. Since they couldn't communicate each had to fend for themselves. The 3 who fell's dominant strategy was to fall while the one who stuck's was to stay altruistic. If he let go, someone else would have died, or could've stayed but he didn't know that because they couldn't communicate.

They create a strategy to be in the minority poll. The majority gets kicked out of thebank game, so they create strategies to choose the minority vote as they predict what the others pick.

  63. An example of game theory in pop culture is in the film The Princess Bride in which a choice had to be made whether or not to drink the poison. The choice was the two main characters deciding who should drink the poison and in which glass was the poison in. A competition of my games trying to figure out who had the poison weighing up the costs and benefits of drinking or not drinking. In the end a internal conclusion was made that the best choice was for one of the characters to drink both glasses to find the poison and save the other.

  67. An example of game theory can be seen in the Dark Knight when the Joker puts bombs on two ships, one filled with good citizens with families, and one filled with criminals, he then lets them decide who is worth more, the criminals, or the innocent, and who is willing to sacrifice themselves. The Joker gave the option of using a detonator on either ship and exploding the other ship, but if nobody does so, then both ships will be detonated. Although the best choice would be for the civilians to detonate the criminal boat, they did not have enough heart, and the criminals did not have enough heart either, so nobody detonated the other. This would have ended with the Joker detonated the ship, but he did not get to because the Batman stopped him.

Game theory is present in any show that shows two characters playing a simple game of Rock-Paper-Scissors, such as an episode of The Simpsons where Bart was playing a game of Rock-Paper-Scissors with Lisa. In this game, one has to try and predict what the other will do. In this episode, Bart thinks that picking rock will be his best bet, which Lisa easily predicts.

  72. Scientists have finally explained the perfect way to dunk a biscuit. Now although this seems strange in the context of game theory it actually matches up very well. There can either be more tea or less tea or a deeper or shallower dunk. Finding the perfect balance point for these variables or the dominant strategy has told us the proper method to dunk our biscuts.

One example of game theory is in the movie/book Insurgent where Tris has to decide whether or not she should take part in following the leader's command opening the box that requires her to risk her life, but opening the box could reveal valuable information. If she does it and dies, all would be lost, but the leader would lose, which would be beneficial to others. If she does it and lives, she will reveal very valuable information. However, if she decides not to do it, more of her peers will be killed.

  75. An example of commitment using third party contracts is found in Mario Puzo's classic novel The Godfather. Those who may have only seen the film and not read the book might remember a few references to "the hostages" prior to any meetings between the heads of the families. In the book, this is described in much greater detail.
Here is the basic idea. Say that Michael Corleone, the head of one Mafia family wishes to meet with Don Tessio, the head of another in order to discuss a deal for mutual advantage. The invited guest has no way of knowing if he will be safe during the visit, and Michael's promises that he will not hurt the guest cannot be believed. There is a problem of commitment here, and without some commitment, the two will not meet.
Enter the Bocchicchio Family. When Michael invites Don Tessio, he not only promises not to harm him, but also hires a member of the Bocchicchio Family to go to Tessio's house. There, the "hostage" will be guarded by Tessio's men. If Don Tessio does not return safely, Tessio's men will kill the hostage. The Bocchicchio Family, seeking revenge, will blame Michael Corleone for the death, since he made the promise that Don Tessio will not be harmed.

Him and his second in command are being brought in for questioning. He knows that if he doesn't talk to the police his worst outcome is to go to jail for all of the crimes so he confesses. The best option is for the others to confess as well but they don't and end up getting the worst part of the deal.

Captain is to choose whether to help his friend and go to jail or himself or arrest his friend and send hi to jai for his crimes. He has to choose one and depending on what he chooses the consequences would follow. Captain America does what he believes which is to save his friend. In doing so he is considered a criminal and Iron man is sent to arrest him for his actions.
